I think I know which vendor you bought that from as well.
Thankfully I’ve never purchased from them. Hopefully you haven’t been stung too badly
@@The_Opal_Leprechaun I did. It was my very first Opal purchase. I kept it and recently cut the small overpriced parcel I got my money back, I definitely didn't make anything from it. I didn't want to keep it but I chose to keep it as a reminder, that was the most valuable thing that I got from that parcel.
@@artisanstonegems that’s terrible….. especially for a first purchase 😕 at least you got something to the value of what you spent. Most new buyers usually get directed to opal-auctions. Hopefully it hasn’t deterred you. The best material and prices are to be had on facebook unfortunately. And that in itself brings a whole other raft of issues but there are some good sellers out there.
@@The_Opal_Leprechaun I 100% agree with you! Yes Facebook has its laundry list of issues but the groups there have the best quality that I've found so far. That first purchase has not deterred me in the slightest!
@@artisanstonegems that’s good to hear 🙂 if you keep an eye on various channels and groups, you will start to see that a lot of “sellers” are in fact just the same people or group of people. I know it’s like a needle in a haystack but sometimes you can strike it lucky with a small miner that sells maybe for 5-6 weeks then they disappear or they get real popular and the prices rocket. I always try to get my material from as close to the source as possible.
It happens especially from the JARs of opal they sell really very little to cut and alot more garbage in there knowingly... but thats it.. its a hassell to return but at least its an option
Just name the vendor. Unusual for a seller on there that’s verified to sell material like that unless it’s listed as beginner. Everyone enhances material either thru lighting. Questionable sellers enhances material with water or glass jars
Im not naming the vendor until I get my refund.
What site was it
A vender on Opal Auctions dot com. After I get my refund I will disclose the name of the vender.
People keep opal in water, that's a common thing. If you aren't aware of that simple fact, maybe you should learn more about opal, before you ever buy any online.
Water and glass jars are something of a staple in the Australian opal industry. If you can't see opal in a jar, and know it's proper worth, then you shouldn't be buying opals. What a preposterous thing to say
Yeah yeah Satan vs Lucifer hey 👋 😊 ❤‼️ 5:58
I watch Justin/Black Opal Direct for years now. I also realize that the packets he sells are mostly for learning and beginners practice...not necessarily for them to get their money back, but to gain knowledge on opal cutting. I think the pack he sent you was very fair and you are doing a fabulous job Tom! Very impressed with your skills on the wheels. I can tell you have a gift for opal cutting so I hope you continue to cut and learn. Enjoying your cutting content!
This isn’t what I expected on shorts. Let’s keep this kinda stuff on reels please
Dude I love your videos..
Thank you.
Have you thought about cleaning up the little color bar that you did find?
The color bar is paper thin. I tried with a different stone with limited success. Its best to do it with a flat lap which I don't have yet.
Nevada opal glowes better and our black opals are actually black and not blue like Australia
Black opal is a category or opal. In general it is referring to the dark potch on the back of the stone which brightens the colors but some black opals do have a black body color. Some of these stones had that once cut. The play of color can be any color but blue is the most common. Check out my videos of cutting these stones.
I've been cutting and cabbing opal for years and I have never bought a single piece I find all my own and having studied geology for many years I do know and understand this....but I'm just stating nevada has better fluorescent opal and we also have truly black opal....even tho australian opal is way more stable....and on a side note I cab and cut all my opals by hand💯 no machines or cabking....just sandpaper lol.....many grades of it 🤣
Makes you wonder if there ISNT a deposit that HAS a play of color up there. Probably too much to ask for it to be stable like Brazilian or Australian, though!
Thats amazing and would have been unbelievable if it had color in there
I saw a flash of green😅
So how does one know it’s opal in such a stage? Because of surrounding finds? I’ve only mined for herkimers.
It's the chemical composition and structural arrangement.
Good question. That's something I should learn. In this case it came from a known opal mine.
Right on!
Okay so you need to put that online and auction it deny the first high auction publicize the offers on it and then put it back up for auction that'll make way more people aware of that that is a very very intricate piece God was doing doing two very specific things at the same time while making that mineral deposit
How cool is that?
That is one Beautiful gem, inclusions don't matter to me..beautiful.
You watch, the HOA is gonna say its not up to code and they are going to fine him for making it better!😅

I can GUARANTEE u didnt get ripped off!!!!
I have one an 3 tier one and it’s great. It feels like an adult sized jingle gym.
I think the lack of athleticism is the problem.

Dude, retitle this video. Justin is too nice to say that. But your title is extremeley rude. Then your brain back on, dummy
Yeah its sad when ya have to cut them but I think you made the right choice. BTW did you make your ring or buy the setting from someone?
I designed the ring and had it made. I'm now gathering the tools to make my own.
@@TomsBackyardWorkshop Let me know when ya get it finished I buy settings from libecore atm but the selection isnt really what I like. I do custom jewery but only sell 1 or 2 a month so it shouldnt swamp ya : )
Why don't they use cross members instead of the horizontal side supports ?
Good question. I believe the simple answer is profit.
I have to give you a thumbs 👍 for what you did. It is wonderful!

your safety officer would give you trouble not for using a product that is very widely used across the construction industry but for not reading the user manual and installing the safety pins.
I did install the safety pins. Watch the video.
@@TomsBackyardWorkshop not in your double stack at the end
Good catch, I didn't notice. However, the safety pins don't affect the stability.
Australia smells like red dust and sweat . . Lol
Well done! The back is excessively thick on the flame one imo. Could be wrong tho. Great cutting and really pretty blacks
Awesome job
I'm very happy to have one of Black Opal Directs opals. I did a happy dance when I got it. Such a good man
Good job overall. I will watch the next one.
Thanks.
So sad to see you grinding half the stone off.
I'm just grinding off potch.
Did you say that you started with 100 grit bit? It looks like you are grinding the color off. I could be wrong. I will keep watching.
Good!
I bought some, 'Scent of Australia', online and they 'scent' me a kangaroo turd. Did I get ripped off?
Nice pieces. Hard to understand you. The music is way too loud.
That's potch on potch.
Looks like the one I have
"Smelled like fruitloops". HAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Many women like me have a yen for that male, Irish ancestor-sourced redhead. And now you just made it worse! Edited to add: I apologize to my soon-to-be black-Irish mate. But he's a good bloc and totally understands!
I like the cushion cut hope to see what you do with the other opals
Good video, just found your channel. Where would you sell these after you have done your work? I also do lapidary work and wish to start doing opals. Want to learn as much as I can before making the investment. Ha, I already have way too much various material to work on. Looking to add more. What do you do? This is an addicting hobby. Thank you Sir
It sure is addictive. I wasn't planning on selling my opals when I started but its obvious now that I am going to have to do something to support my habit. Im not ready to part with any yet but Im considering making a website.
@@TomsBackyardWorkshop Very nice, I'll keep a watch out for ya
